Terms of service

These terms are a contract between you and Youssef Elwakil, trading as Hesn — a sole trader based in Victoria, Australia ("Hesn", "we", "us"), the operator of the Hesn service and the hesn.app website. By creating a subscription or using the service, you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use Hesn.

1. What Hesn is

Hesn is a content filter with an accountability layer. It works by directing your device's DNS lookups through our filtering resolver, using a configuration profile or DNS setting that you install. When the filter is enabled, requests to domains on our blocklists fail, so the content doesn't load. You also nominate an accountability partner — a person who receives a periodic summary of activity and is notified if the filter is removed or weakened.

Hesn filters at the network level. It is a tool to support a commitment you have already made — not a guarantee.

2. What Hesn does not promise

• It is not a perfect wall. New sites appear constantly, some content is served from domains we don't block, VPNs and alternative DNS settings can bypass it, and a determined person can uninstall it. We don't claim otherwise.
• It can over-block. A filter that errs toward caution will sometimes block something legitimate. You can ask us to review any domain.
• It depends on services we don't control — your device OS, your network, and third-party infrastructure. Outages happen.
• It is not spyware for someone else. The accountability partner receives summaries and tamper alerts, not a live feed of everything you do. Both people should understand and consent to the arrangement.

3. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 18 to hold a Hesn subscription. You may set Hesn up on a device used by someone under 18 if you are their parent or legal guardian. You're responsible for keeping your setup link and account access private, and for the accuracy of the email addresses you give us (yours and your accountability partner's).

4. Subscriptions, billing and payment

• Hesn is sold as a recurring subscription, billed monthly or annually depending on the plan you choose. Prices are shown on the pricing page in US dollars and exclude any tax Paddle is required to add.
• Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period using your payment method on file, until you cancel.
• You can cancel at any time. Filtering continues until the end of the period you have already paid for, then stops.
• Refunds and the 30-day guarantee are covered in our Refund & Cancellation Policy.
• We may change prices. Existing subscribers keep their current rate for as long as the subscription stays active; a changed price takes effect only on a new subscription or after a lapse.

5. Acceptable use

Don't use Hesn to break the law, to monitor another adult without their knowledge and consent, to resell or redistribute the service without our written agreement, or to attack, overload or probe our infrastructure. Don't misrepresent your identity or your accountability partner's consent. We may suspend or end a subscription that is used this way.

6. Changes to the service

Hesn is early-stage and evolving. We add, change and occasionally remove features. We maintain and update the blocklists at our discretion, guided by the categories described on the site. If we make a material adverse change to a feature you're paying for, you may cancel and request a pro-rata refund of the unused period.

7. Your content and data

How we handle your personal information — including DNS query data used to run the filter and produce accountability summaries — is set out in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

8. Disclaimers and liability

Hesn is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude all implied warranties. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be excluded (including the Australian Consumer Law, where it applies to you).

Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability to you for any claim relating to Hesn is limited to the amount you paid us for the service in the 12 months before the claim.

9. Termination

You can stop using Hesn and cancel at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the service — in which case we'll give reasonable notice and refund any unused prepaid period.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, and the courts of that place have non-exclusive jurisdiction. If you contract with us as a consumer elsewhere, you keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protections of your home country.
